Stages of German Shepherd Puppy Development – Birth To Adulthood

German Shepard has various growth and development milestones in contrast to their weight and height. Let’s look into how they mature from birth.

Birth to 3 weeks

At this stage, a puppy is wholly dependent on its mother. It has to be cared for, kept warm, mother feed to provide nutrients, nurtured, and even needs help to eliminate its waste.

In only the first week, the puppy starts to crawl. Following the 10 days, GSD Ears and Eyes begin to peek through with a blurry vision and open fully as soon as it completes its 2 weeks span.

In the 2nd week, the first baby GSD teeth pop up. While in the 3rd week, they are ready to walk well on their own.

4 weeks to 12 weeks

This is the socializing stage of a puppy. They weigh double their birth weight. The mother teaches its puppies vital social dog skills to interact with their surroundings, and by the 4th week, they begin to play around with their littermates. Moreover, till this age, most GSD teeth erupt and the puppy starts to dig in dog food.

As the 6th week commences, gradually their senses sharpen. Along with demonstrating adult behavior like sniffing tails to greet and mount, they appear to respond to fear.

Soon GSD Ears bolt upright when they age 12 weeks. Some puppies might begin teething and erect ears when they are about 5-6 months.

3 Months to 6 Months

During this juvenile period, most of the necessary development is completed. Now it is time for them to strike some motor skills and embrace all adult teeth to munch on real dog food.

At this stage, it is advised to provide them with teething toys to avoid them chewing on furniture and shoes.

At 6 months of age GSD growth will slow down and your puppy may begin to show fear and confusion to your commands and surrounding objects.

6 Months to 16 Months

At this developing stage, the German Shepherd reaches its sexual maturity. Females begin to experience GSD heat cycles at six months while males mature sexually at seven months. If you are thinking about GSD breeding, be sure to have your dogs in good formation to breed.

When German Shepherd Dogs turn one, they manifest attentive behavior. Their personalities start reflecting and exhibit dominance. It is the best time to train your dog to be obedient.

At this age, they mostly reach their full GSD puppy size as shown in the German Shepherd Growth Chart.

16 Months to 36 Months

At this stage, there are no obvious milestones to reach, however, German Shepard Puppy continues to grow to 24 months for females and 36 months for male GSD respectively. If your puppy continues to gain weight, call your veterinarian to ensure that it doesn’t lead to obesity.

During this period, make sure to feed them high-quality food to ensure healthy growth. GSD Food Chart will help to guide you through GSD Appetite.
