If you’ve ever seen a Tibetan Mastiff in person, you know the word big doesn’t really do them justice. The first time I met one, it felt like standing next to a small bear rather than a dog. These dogs have an impressive presence, not just because of their weight and height, but also because…
When I first met a Tibetan Mastiff, I thought I was looking at a lion. The dog had this massive mane, golden-red fur, and a presence that stopped everyone in their tracks. Later, when I started researching the breed, I learned that Tibetan Mastiffs come in many different colors, not just the famous lion-like red….
If you’ve ever lived with a Chihuahua, you know they come with a lot of personality packed into that tiny body. My own Chihuahua, Bella, was the perfect mix of sass and sweetness, except when it came to barking. She barked at other dogs, at people walking past the window, at the neighbor’s lawnmower even…
When I first started looking for a dog, one of the biggest hurdles wasn’t finding the right personality or size, it was my allergies. I grew up sneezing around almost every dog I met, and the idea of actually living with one full-time seemed impossible. But after doing a ton of research (and more than…
A few years ago, my neighbor brought home a beautiful but very nervous rescue dog, a Rottweiler mix. I’ll never forget the first time I went over to meet him. He was gorgeous, big brown eyes, shiny coat, but the second I stepped too close to his food bowl, he growled. My neighbor was quick…

When my first dog started slowing down, I didn’t realize right away that she had officially entered the senior stage of life. She was still wagging her tail every morning, greeting me at the door, and begging for walks, but the little changes started to add up. She’d stop halfway up the stairs to catch…
A few years ago, when my niece was born, my sister started asking me nonstop about dogs that would be safe and loving around kids. She wanted a dog that wasn’t just cute, but also gentle, trainable, and part of the family. At the time, I already had my German Shepherd, but I knew not…
When I first brought home my German Shepherd, I honestly didn’t realize just how big he was going to get. I thought I was ready for a large dog, but when he started filling out, bigger paws, a chest that looked like it belonged to a lion, and a tail that could knock over anything…
I still remember the first time I had the chance to spend time with both a German Shepherd and a Belgian Malinois. A close friend of mine worked in K9 training, and he introduced me to his German Shepherd, a calm yet commanding dog that seemed to read every movement I made. Later that day,…
